Titan Traditions

Titan Traditions

With 133 years of history to draw from, Illinois Wesleyan University Football has built a stock of strong traditions that carry forward the Titan Spirit. Join in with old ones and help build the new. #TGOE

Tommy the Torch Lighter

One of the most important Titan Traditions is the pregame lighting of the IWU Eternal Flame. Accompanied by the Titan Band, Tommy Titan sets off the Flame prior to each home game, lighting the way to another Titan victory.

Tommy was born in 1951 to IWU Registrar Lee Short and originally wore a Roman helmet and toga and was pulled around on a cart resembling a pony. He’s a lot friendlier now.

IWU vs Millikin

Illinois Wesleyan University and Millikin University have played each other 114 times in football since 1904.

The rivalry has often been heated and, as far back as 1927, IWU’s student newspaper, The Argus, under a sub-headline stating “CAMPUS SPIRIT INCREASES AS GAME WITH WESLEYAN’S OLD RIVALS DRAWS CLOSER",” reported this:

“Wesleyan student spirit, outwardly at least sleeping during the first part of the week, roused itself yesterday, and today and tomorrow will be brought to a higher and higher pitch as one of the biggest events of the school year approaches—the football game with Millikin.”

The record between the teams is astonishingly close as—believe it or not—each school has 52 wins! There also have been 10 ties. IWU’s longest winning streak is 10 games and her longest losing streak 9, but the Titans have won 13 of the last 14 matchups and still hold the record for largest margin of victory at 62-0 in a 1965 contest.

Still playing for stickers

You may have notice white football stickers popping up on players’ helmets throughout the season. Illinois Wesleyan Football has a Fightin’ Titan Team and Individual Award System to recognize players who “Think, Act, and Look Like Undisputed Champions.”

As with every major program, coaches review film after each game. Beyond their usual grading of plays and players, however, Titan coaches are on the lookout for a series of good deeds on the field that can net players a new sticker for their hats. There are team awards for each side of the ball like No Turnovers, 400 yards of Offense, and 100% Scoring in the Red Zone for the Offense, 3 Takeaways, Less than 13 points allowed in a Win, and No Big Plays for Defense, and Punt Return Average <5 yards, 100% PAT, or scoring on a Kickoff Return for Special Teams. Individuals add to their white football collection for efforts like 100 yards of rushing (both the Rusher and the entire O-Line) and Key Blocks on Offense, 10 Tackles or a Sack on Defense, and BIG HITs on KO and Punts or a 40-yard FG (Kicker, Holder, and Snapper) on Special Teams.

Enjoy the geometry as you scan the various shapes the boys choose for their personal designs and, next time you notice a new decoration on your favorite player’s helmet, ask him what it’s for. We bet he’ll know exactly why he got it.

Homecoming Traditions?

Many Titan Traditions go on display each year at Homecoming. Thankfully, however, there are some that are no longer evident.

In 1975, Illinois State’s daily newpaper, The Vidette, reported that, “around the time of the 1921 Homecomings, Illinois Wesleyan and ISU used to try to burn each others bonfires and rivalry between the two schools was evident. In fact, [ISU Faculty member J. Russell] Steele said, borderline vandalism often resulted, with letter painting on buildings and sidewalks, rockthrowing fiascos, and some personal injury.”

We’re not privy to all the priorities IWU’s Administration sets for Homecoming weekends, but are confident that they are actively seeking to avoid any rockthrowing fiascos.

Walk to end Alzheimer’s

One of the members of “Wesleyan’s Mt. Rushmore” of coaching greats. Don “Swede” Larson was a player and coach at IWU and a true Titan in every way. Coach Larson led the Titans from 1954-1986, when he was succeeded by a young former player of his named Norm Eash.

Since 1997, the Illinois Wesleyan football team has participated in the Coach Don “Swede” Larson Memory Walk in his honor, raising money for the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Each year, the boys establish a fundraising goal for the team, usually set by the team captains, in an effort to involve each player in the team’s contribution.

The “Watermelon Scrimmage”

Each Fall, IWU football players celebrate the close of preseason camp with their Green White Scrimmage. After three weeks of intense practices, unrelenting study, and welcome team chemistry activities, the current crop of Titans usually are more than ready for a chance to show their progress on the field and to enjoy a moment to unwind with their teammates and families before the season kicks off.

Both of those things happen when the annual Green-White Scrimmage morphs into the Watermelon Scrimmage. As Titan players leave the field from their inter-squad skirmish, tables full of fresh-cut, ice-cold watermelon greet them. In what became a Titan Tradition over 60 years ago, Coach Don “Swede” Larson began rounding up a truckload of fresh watermelons and a line-up of Titan dads to provide the boys a cooling snack on their way to the locker room. The knife used then still sees action today, kept under lock and key in an undisclosed location until its lone appearance at this game each year. Coach Eash remembers his initial taste of the cold fruit from his first year as a player at IWU and has said, “there’s never been anything like it.”

Captains’ Parents Lead Football Boosters

In 2010, Coach Eash started a “new tradition” of asking the parents of the team’s captains to organize and involve all of the team’s parents and supporters in the Titan Football Booster Parents. Kathy Pierburg, mother of Karl (‘97), had started the Titan Boosters to host the senior banquet and to coordinate all the things IWU parents do to support the boys throughout the year.

The real tradition of Captains’ Parents is to be your contact to the team and through that, to make you feel welcome. We hope we’re doing that. We are grateful for those who did the same for us and we look forward to helping those of you who will do it in the future. As always, #TGOE.

A True Titan

Some traditions are the product of faith. Some result from family. Sadly, some are fixed in tragedy.

The rock the Titans touch on their way into GameDay stands in honor of Titan Offensive Lineman and Co-Captain Doug Schmied (‘06), who tragically passed away after becoming ill following a pre-season morning practice in August of 2005. He was taken immediately to BroMenn Medical Center and then transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. His condition worsened and he died just a few days later. An accounting and computer science major at Illinois Wesleyan, the 6-foot-3, 285-pound Schmied was a two-year starter as an offensive lineman for the Titans, a member of the Illinois Wesleyan Accounting Society, and the recipient of an Illinois Wesleyan Alumni Academic Scholarship

Tailgating

It may not be the Joyce Lot at Notre Dame, nor even the Quad at Alabama. And it’s certainly not the Waldron Deck at Soldier Field. But that doesn’t mean we can’t throw a party. Tailgating in the lots surrounding Tucci Stadium and the Shirk Center at Illinois Wesleyan is a great way to celebrate beautiful Fall days in Central Illinois and to get primed to cheer on the Titans. You’ll find that the friendly, family atmosphere at the Titan Tailgates is unsurpassed by any venue in the country. Tailgate Central is in the exclusive Football Parents Lot right next to Tucci Stadium, but you can set up your tent and your mini-Weber in any of the lots around the Shirk Center.

Wherever you set up, feel free to move around to the other parties, introduce yourself, and get to know the other parents and fans. Plenty of new friendships have been made on game day and we look forward to meeting you when you stop by.

The Green Line

The Green Line

It’s Saturday morning and your buddies are still sleeping. Practices are over. You’re in the locker room. The coaches are done talking. Your ankles are taped and your chinstrap is snapped.

It’s a beautiful Fall weekend and you’re part of the very select group of parents whose sons play college football. Your trip to the game is behind you. You’re in the parking lot. Your brats have been devoured. Your player’s personalized sign is in place and the cowbell is ringing.

It’s GameTime. Let’s go.

To get there, everyone goes to The Green Line! The players are wearing their gamefaces and their families and friends are getting their cheer on along the decorated path to Tucci Stadium and another Fightin’ Titan victory. You’ll want to be part of this stirring football tradition at every IWU home game. Listen for the cowbell about 75 minutes prior to kickoff calling all fans to line the sidewalk between the stadium and Shirk Center to welcome the team and pump them up before kickoff. Cheers, whistles, raucous applause and general mayhem are all encouraged, but be sure to leave room for the players to touch the inspirational Doug Schmied Rock on their way to the field. Be part of The Green Line this Fall—another Titan Tradition.

The National Anthem Game

Each basketball season, Titan Football players demonstrate their patriotism and school spirit—along with their vocal skills—in a stirring (?) rendition of our National Anthem prior to an IWU Men's BB Game. Their annual appearance is typically held in conjunction with a BIG Titan recruiting weekend. Maybe your son was at a National Anthem Game while they were still considering if they were “Ready to be a Titan.” Here is the team in 2019.

Passing Image

Sadly, one Titan Tradition that we no longer will be able to enjoy is going to tomdphotos.com after literally every game to review the great photos IWU Football photographer Tom Dittmer posted of our Titans in GameDay action. Tom, just 64, passed away in March of 2021. Since at least 2014, he and daughter Aubrey were fixtures on all 4 sidelines of Titan Varsity and JV football games no matter where—or in what conditions—they were played, capturing 1000s of images of our boys for all of us to enjoy.
